Love at War...'a great silence.'
'These are the invisible men, the thousands who before the war had sweethearts and afterwards had wives, who begat the baby boomers and lived on, perhaps never telling a soul what they'd done in bunks, camp beds or blacked-out back alleys, who appear in the writing and testimony of gay men describing a fertile, open sexual atmosphere, yet leave very little record of themselves, a great silence in our collective memory of the Second World War.' Luke Turner 'Men at War' 2023

It has often been acknowledged that many soldiers who served in WWII were slow or unwilling to discuss their war experience upon returning home. One may wonder how many had a reason other than the horrors of combat. A great silence of the heart perhaps.
