If you change 'girl' to 'boy', the song is 300% gayer.

Tearin’ Up My Heart (Gay version)

Let it go If

you want me boy

let me know

I am down on my knees

I can't take it anymore

(straight version)

Let it go If

you want me girl

let me know

I am down on my knees

I can't take it anymore

Simply substituting "girl" for "boy" not only makes it gayer, but reveals entirely new layers of meaning.

The song stops being a generic romantic complaint and becomes the soundtrack to a specific, real, and deeply felt drama: that of loving in secret, of begging for a sign from the other guy, of feeling that this love, by its mere existence, is breaking your heart.

Addressed to a "boy," the song captures the essence of teenage or young male love: the confusion, the intensity, the feeling that the world will end if that "boy" doesn't reciprocate. It's the sound of a heart struggling against a social prohibition.

What can sound like a cliché in a straight song sounds like a confession in a gay version. It's no longer just a love song; it's an act of visibility.

So yeah, next time you listen to it, change the lyrics. You'll see how a '90s pop gem instantly becomes an anthem of love and desire, even among boys.

The Man That Got Away

Many songs (particularly ones about love or sex), are unambiguously addressed to a woman or a man, or specifically sung from a male or female perspective. While it's not uncommon for musicians to perform songs "in character" rather than as themselves, some people can't accept an artist singing from the viewpoint of a different gender or sexual orientation than their own. However, this was averted in Rufus Wainwright's version.

Why this need by singers to gender-conform to the heterosexual agenda?
