What's the difference between followers and friends?

C4 asked, "Is a follower a 'friend'? Do these younger guys entertain followers as prospective sex partners or are they 'quarry' for the wolves amongst us on dating sites? 

For active gay men, does sex lead to friendships or friendship lead to sex?

For Gen Y and millennials, I'm sure they figure the more followers the better, quantity over quality, and that's why they have so many.

A follower might want a very superficial connection or a closer one. Lovers sometimes become friends and vice versa. Dating sites/hookup apps? Everyone just blocks people they don't find attractive, myself included. So if he hasn't blocked you, he might want to continue or deepen the connection or not. (I'm not sure I fully understand the quarry and the wolves part.)

I once knew an older man who was convinced that all these hot young guys were into him.  He was ok looking but older and wasn't that rich as far as I could tell. Well I thought he was deluding himself but if it makes him happy and he's not hurting anyone... Sadly, he seemed like he might be ripe for exploitation.
