What's a reasonable number of friends?

When I see people with friends in the four digits, it makes me wonder why they have so many. And I don't mean influencers, but just ordinary people. Do people now just connect with everyone they meet in person? Are demographics a factor? Of course, some will fall on the spectrum between acquaintance and close friend. Can someone with 5, 000 friends be taken seriously (excluding, of course, famous or newsworthy people)?

   The Friends thing on GPT is akin to barnacles feeding - they sift all, and spit out the unuseful. It's almost sociopath behaviour.

What about off GPT? Remember, a while back, I was going to resume online dating? Some of these younger guys I see have thousands of "followers." It's a bit intimidating.

Is a follower a 'friend'? Do these younger guys entertain followers as prospective sex partners or are they 'quarry' for the wolves amongst us on dating sites?
