Did the Greeks invent pretty boys or discover them?
It is true that the Egyptians already had a canon of beauty but it was only for nobles and the pharaoh. On the other hand, the Greeks gave us the gymnasium or the athletes and heroes. With their statues of gods and heroes like Apollo and Heracles, they defined a type of "handsome guy" (young, muscular, proportioned) that still resonates today. The Greeks not only invented "handsome boys" as an aesthetic standard.
The first Greek statues were sculpted for men who contemplated the beauty of other men.

But the Greeks were the first to make the male body an absolute ideal,
They created the gymnasium, a space where men sculpted their naked bodies as if they were living works of art. Their gods and heroes, such as Hercules and Apollo, were not only strong and brave, but were also depicted with unparalleled aesthetic perfection. Even Antinous, although a royal youth, became an ideal of beauty immortalized in art.

The Beauty, in classical Greece, was synonymous with virtue. It had been, at least, for four long centuries in the case of men, who exposed their sporting skills nakedly in the arena. In art, as is generally the case in current cinema, Hellenic heroes were muscular, proportioned, eternally young. On the other hand, the unattractive features of foreigners or satyrs showed their moral rot.
The Greeks may not have invented or discovered pretty boys but they certainly popularized fucking them. And their legacy continues to this day.
