Many descriptors are used to describe or define how a man is regarded in the eyes of the observer: rough, scruffy, rugged, nuggety, plain, virile, good-looking, striking, handsome, elegant and breathtaking among them. This blog serves to determine what difference there is between 'beautiful' and 'pretty', and whether there is a distinct physiognomy of either?
(I can't ignore beauty, but I can ignore pretty!)

Ah, is it about the chin, then?
The chin, or mentum osseum, is a unique anatomical feature of modern humans, found only in the species homo sapiens. It is noticeable in utero from the fifth month, and is retained into adult life.
Chin shape is generally regarded as an important aspect of facial attractiveness, especially in males. The attractiveness of the human face plays an essential role in mating as it may signal the genetic suitability of a mate. Broad-chinned males earn higher ranks in the military, are regarded as more masculine and attractive, and are viewed as socially dominant across cultures.
The chin (along with brow ridges, mandibular processes, and a wider nose) is formed by the deposition of cortical bone stimulated by an abundance of testosterone, firstly in the prenatal development but especially in puberty, and counts toward sexual dimorphism (the fundamental physical differences between sexes). Most of the obvious changes of higher circulating testosterone levels come in the form of a wider jaw, sharper features, a more angular appearance. (The downside of higher concentrations of testosterone is an impaired immunosuppressive ability, so the association between having a broad chin and remaining healthy is hypothesised as a desirable mating quality.) The chin is a testosterone-mediated sex difference.
