A father of a childhood friend was part of the forces that landed on the beaches that day. I still can remember his stories of that day. Sadly, like many others who were there, he drank himself to death. He was barely 40.
By then Americans drinking themselves to death after fighting an European war was not an unusual thing. My maternal grandfather who served in WWI used the bottle to deal with his memories serving in the Argent Forest. It probably bothered him, like many first generation Americans of his day that he was shooting at his cousins. This grandfather was only 37 when he died.
My father was in the Navy during WWII and saw a lot of destruction. He was not at Normandy. It was not until I was an adult that he told me what he saw.
I appreciate that it took the efforts of many nations to liberate Europe and I appreciate the good will of many of the European members of this site. I also appreciate that the German people like the Italians and others were misled and forced into this war by despotic leaders. I count Germany as one of America's closest allies. Plus my first gay crush was on a same aged boy whose mother came to America from Germany after the war. Germans are so hot.
But FUCK YOU to the member who I won't name who has to diminish the Americans for rescuing his nation. I don't hate him, I just feel sorry he has a baby dick
As a German, I remember this day every year. The invasion and the self-sacrifice, the courage and perseverance of the allies have removed an injustice state, destroyed a regime of terror and brought peace, freedom and democracy to the following generations of Germans.
I'm grateful for that and bow my head.
