The price that a young man had to pay for his sexuality
The life of a young man who had a beautiful life to live on was cut short. He was murdered by his relatives. And the motive for the murder? The young man was gay. This is the tragic story of Alireza Fazeli Monfared, a 20 years old Iranian who loved life very much. Alireza was a cheerful guy who loved fashion and liked to do make-up. But he knew that he couldn’t lead a life of his choice in a very conservative country where narrow-minded religious leaders dictated the dos and don’ts for the citizens. Alireza planned to seek asylum in some other countries because he wanted to live in a country where he can feel safe about his sexuality. His decision to leave the country was made more urgent because of the threats he faced from the relatives of his father. His father’s relatives disapproved of his style of life. Alireza Fazeli wished to go to some European countries where he could live with freedom. But for that, he needs to get exemption from the military service that was mandatory for Iranians. Homosexuality is illegal in Iran and could be punishable by death. But gay people are given exemption from compulsory military service. Since homosexuality is considered a psychological disorder in Iran, the military board can give exemption to gay people from doing mandatory military service. So utilizing this provision Alireza Fazeli applied for the exemption and got it. But as fate would have it, the documents regarding his exemption were seen by a relative of him and when the relative realized that Alireza was gay it enraged the relatives and they decided to kill him. On 4 May, the fateful day, he went to a shop to sell his mobile phone. But his relatives, a half-brother and two cousins were waiting for him in a car outside the shop. They told him that his father wanted to talk about some urgent matter with him and took him with them. They drove the car to a rural village where they beheaded him with a knife. The life of the handsome young man who dreamt of a life of freedom in a European country ended in such a gruesome way. Homosexuality is not a psychological disorder. But the homophobia that leads to the murder of innocent gay people like Alireza Fazeli is the worst form of psychological disorder.

His (male, extended) family chose to kill him rather than let him escape their bigotry. Not his immediate family members - his extended family, one circle removed. They wouldn't let him leave. This is male perpetuation of the national patriarchal authoritarianism ingrained on a 'village' level. Power needs a scapegoat.
IRAN,that says it all.
