I never knew of Wilde's proficiency in both Classical and New Testament Greek, so it was quite amusing when he read from the Passion and was told to stop, he persisted in reading, saying "I want to know how this turn's out!"
When he was dying in a hotel room in France, he was recorded as saying, a propos de the garish, florid wallpaper, "One of us has to go!" So he never lost his enormous sense of humor, even at the very end...
