I always have to laugh at myself when people ask me how it went when I came out to my parents.  Most guys that I know had this big production about coming out to their family members.  Mine was more of a set of events that happened that led to my parents coming to me.  

It started the summer that I turned 14.  I was with a friend of mine one day and we were out clothes shopping for the new school year that was about a month away yet.  While we were shopping for shirts and jeans and stuff I had made my way over to the socks and underwear.  I am a freak with socks.  I don't like wearing socks and shoes much anyhow.  Hey, I'm a California beach boy, give me a pair of sandals and bare feet and I'm good.  But there are times where you do need to wear socks and shoes.  I can't stand wearing old socks though.  After they have been through the wash a dozen times or so, they are done. 

While I was picking out the new socks I noticed that the store also sold thong type underwear.  They weren't anything special, just your basic Joe Boxer ones, but my heart started to thump as I thought about the idea of wearing thong underwear to school.  So I grabbed a couple packs of them and ran back to my friend with my socks as well.  He laughed a bit when he saw the thongs and basically said "you're crazy man".

I started to wear them the next day so I could get used to them before school started.  It was a little rough getting used to that part that goes up your butt cheeks, but after a week of wearing I finally got used to how they felt on my butt.  When school started, the first day I was wearing my thong, pair of soccer shorts, tshirt, and my flips, and off I went.  

It was an incredible feeling when I was at school.  I was upbeat, I was confident.  I was doing something that probably no other boy was doing in my school.  Plus a bit later on I found that wearing them and sagging my shorts while I was going bare chested on the boardwalk at the beach helped in turning a few guys eyes.  But my parents didn't know that I had them yet, and I was still trying to keep it that way.

Well, advance a few months to a weekend where I was doing my homework in my room while I was doing my laundry down stairs.  Since I was 13 my parents made me do my own laundry.  I remember my mother saying "your a teen now, you can do your own laundry. You can wash and fold your own underwear now".  This afternoon though, she decided that she was going to help out.  I was in my room and she knocked on the door.  When I opened the door, there she was standing with a one of my thongs dangling from her fingers and all she said was "these are not underwear". 

I explained that I had bought them with my own money and that if I wanted to wear them I was going to do.  That didn't exactly make her mad, but she didn't like it, I had one-up'ed her.  Then she one-up'ed me by saying "you live in my house and what I say goes".  But it took me all of two seconds to come back with "fine, if I can't wear them I wont wear anything at all".  Then she tossed it at me, turned around and walked out. 

Didn't hear about it at all after that until about a week later when The Day came.  I was up in my bedroom sitting at my desk in just a pair of my boxer briefs doing my homework when my dad knocked on the door.  When I said that he could come in, he sat on the edge of my bed that faced my desk and said "can I ask you a stupid question".  I was like OMG what is he doing?  But I said yea.  Then he asked "are you gay?"

I knew my parents didn't have an issue with gay people, but I was still freaking out, and I was sitting there in my underwear.  I very cautiously said yea.  Then he was like "OK, we have that out in the open now."  Apparently they had suspected I was gay since I was 12 and the whole thong wearing incident with mom pushed it over the edge.  Their thing was gay boys wear thongs, straight boys don't. 

Fortunately he didn't ask about my sexual activity to that point.  I may have been embarrassed at that moment, but that question would have made me throw up.  lol.  And that was my coming out.
