The U.S. government’s $80.7 billion bailout of the auto industry lasted from December 2008 to December 2014. The U.S. Department of the Treasury used funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program. In the end, taxpayers lost $10.2 billion. The Big Three automakers asked Congress for help ...

The quickest way to turn this negative into a positive would be to educate the displaced workers. Automation and clean energy are the future, yet how many people are taking advantage of programs that are already out there to re-train them for the future economy? In many of our classes are people in their forties and fifties who are taking the same courses as we are, and in many cases get better grades. They also bring wisdom and history to the class. Engineering, in all of it's disciplines, machining, electronics, these are not impossible goals for the average person. Simply to give up is not an option. Henry Ford hired many people who used to be buggy makers. It's no different now.

GM sold Vauxhall UK & Opel Germany early last year as the business had been loss making and had not made a profit since 1999 to Peugeot PSA Group. One of the big problems that was stated at the time, was simply that GM Motors plants were not making the type of vehicles that people wanted to buy. Suv sales were raising massively yet Vauxhall and Opel just manufactured cars.

Since the sale to the PSA Group, the plants have just made their first profits in 2018 but in order for this to happen, Opel had to shed 3,800 jobs at the Opel plant in Germany and 250  at its Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port, UK.

As was mentioned at the time and on earlier reports of possible total plant closures before the sale to PSA Group, many call the business for deciding what they do, but how many slating them actually drive a Vauxhall or Opel car and in the US will drive a GM branded car. It was even pointed out that most of the employees didn't even drive/support their own employers branded vehicles.

Unless there is the demand, then output has to reduce. Failing that, then the whole of the business could be put at risk to the point were it folds completely and then the job losses would be even greater.

Some car manufactures have gone totally to the wall in the last decade or two. They are not all saved by the other organisations/brands.

At the end of the day, as mentioned in the video clip....the biggest threat to many skilled and lower skilled employment is AUTOMATION!!!!

Within the next 10 - 25 yrs the job market is going to change dramatically and not for the better for the younger generation employment wise sadly.

Your thinking on (un)fairness and (in)equality is dreadful. Jordan Peterson lays it out quite logical here. This thinking you and many others have regarding what you perceive as the injustice of equality of outcome is the overreaching factor you place everything on and to achieve that, well everything to include injustice is justifiable. Such irrational non thinking, unintelligent nonsense.

your confusing socialism with communisum im thinking norway sweden  europe seems to work ok  yes i have been to yugoslavia and berlin when the wall came down  i was there december 1989 - we   travelled fom uk to spend christmas in west berlin - and i entered with my brother as  19 years olds in to east berlin with out a valid visa - as a non german  on dec 23rd we joined the protests on the west berlin side -midday cold berlin winters day climbed a police van and stood on the berlin wall in front of the brandanburg gate

several hours later a friend  west german spotted us on the east berlin side so some how we dropped the 3.5 m off the wall on to the east berlin side and he took us up to the brandeburg gate lots of people and soldiers well after an hour or so was getting dark and cold - so how to get back accross the border through the wall - we had come without our passports and no visa authority my german friend said warned dont speak keep your head down just push through the crossing the guards are overwhelmed - thankfully we got through tho was fucking scary at the time and emerged on to the west berlin side of the wall releaved -- two days after chrstmas we got a visa to cross at check point charlie offically and wandered round east berlin it was cold grey and grim - please dont confuse socialism with communism

think if you worried about your fellow citizens losing their jobs you should become a socialist like me where we care about each other aid each other when we fall sick or lose our jobs while those at the top reap the benefits of tax cuts ......

delonge - gm motors are not electeted they are making commercial decisions to make a profit  -their products   are not selling and they have tax breaks so despite this they cut costs - i dont see how this has any link to alexandria cortez - perhaps you should buy a gm vechical to support this company
