The original vision of the Peace Corps has given way to politics as usual, in which directors and staff milk the taxpayer dry and accomplish little of real value overseas. Before you accept an assignment with the Peace Corps, please do carefully investigate the specific program in which you will be asked to participate. I spent two years in, and complaining about, a failed program in which the Peace Corps was taking jobs away from locals rather than engaging in actual sustainable development. I sincerely believe that 2/3 to 3/4 of the Peace Corps programs are doing more harm than good, and thus need to be purged.
I had a teacher in high school who did Peace Corps in India in late 60s early 70s and said he felt used. They had him teach at a school that only wealthy Indians could afford to attend, and he wanted to help the really poor.

Yes it'll be fun and rewarding. I don't agree with foreign aid to ungrateful wiener countries myself, but at the very least you will see some of the World.
