In the early 1990s, Peter Azur ranked among popular Czech actors for three years, nearly achieving the stature of fellow Czech Johan Paulik who acted in films for mature audiences over a longer period. Azur worked primarily under the direction of Rolf Hammerschmidt. Azur was born in the Czech Republic, but appeared in films in a number of European countries. Artistically, Azur was distinguished on camera by his laconic, unemotional, nonchalant stage presence, and was known for his signature blond hair and youthfully rugged looks. He was classified in a high esthetic category, ranking alongside Bel Ami performers, and was deemed commercially marketable due largely to his unique characterizations. His popularity peaked for several years, then subsided. Azur attempted to reclaim his career later, but his fan-base seemed to have dwindled during the interim.
