California Jam 1974

Which old guys, like me, remember the first California Jam at Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California on 6 Apr 1974. ABC aired parts of it throughout the day. Deep Purple and Emerson, Lake and Palmer (ELP) headlined the festival. 


The bands who played, in order of appearance were:Rare Earth, Earth, Wind and Fire, Eagles, Seals and Crofts, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and ELP.


They set, what were then, records for loudest sound system and for the highest paid attendance with almost a half-million people buying tickets. 


Woodstock had come before this with a larger crowd. But, because there was no security and people could come and go as they pleased, Woodstock only sold a few thousand tickets.  Woodstock had been planned to be recorded (taped for the day) but California Jam was not. At California Jam security was tight with a fence around the entire venue. 


Back in my early teens Black Sabbath was my most favorite band and here is what they were like on 6.4.1974.
