The Blocking of Porn Sites: An Act of Authoritarianism
The following thoughts were prompted by the blocking of GBT by the government of India.
Under the democratic system, a government is expected to protect the interests of the people. But that is not what we see in the actions of the governments of many countries. The governments are trying to deny the rights of people.Today in many countries the line separating democracy and autocracy has vanished due to the anti-people policies and laws of their governments.Even if it’s the people who elect the government, the power of governance makes the government to work against the interests of the people. It has scant regard for the rights of people which are guaranteed by the constitution. And this denial of their freedom and rights is what we see in actions like censorship of media. The government goes to the extent of dictating the people about what they should see or read. The best example of this could be seen in the blocking of porn sites. Here the government not only decides what the people should see or not but also dons the role of the protector of their morality. The government’s over enthusiasm in checking the morality of people is prompted by its autocratic tendency rather than the interest in the moral discipline of the people. The sexual urge is very difficult to control.Even a morally disciplined person can’t overcome this urge completely. Then we can think about those people who commit sexual crimes because of their uncontrollable sexual urge. The government justifies its action of blocking porn sites by saying that they were responsible for sexual crimes. But it’s difficult to imagine that those who commit sexual crimes do so because of the influence of porn sites. The very sexual urge is enough for them to commit such crimes. They don’t commit such crimes always after watching porn. The sight of women’s body, alcohol, and the provocative dress worn by women are the most probable factors which prompt them to do sexual crimes. Then why should we single out porn sites for blaming?
Should only the people be subjected to moral scrutiny? What about the morality of the politicians who head the government? Shouldn’t their morality also to be checked? When politicians can enjoy sex in the comfort and privacy of their official residences and guest houses what is wrong in a person watching porn in the privacy of his home? Why this sudo puritans make a hue and cry about porn sites and show enthusiasm in banning them? Are they the right people to protect the moral edifice of the society?
That was a wonderfully written piece Freakfook. So sorry to hear you've had this grief from your own government. Especially, as you say, in a supposedly free democratic country. Authoritarian, controlling and often financially corrupt politicians usually make sex or sexuality their first target, usually because such 'social issues' (like gay marriage, abortion, or porn) can get the support of working class, but very religious, voters. The very voters such politicians and parties are usually otherwise shafting economically. In so many instances it's a shabby distraction tactic. Glad you've still got access to GBT some other way! You would have been missed my friend.
