Original-
Ósnotr maðr
hyggr sér alla vera
viðhlæjendr vini
hitki hann fiðr

Translation-
The fool thinks that all who
laugh with him are his friends.
He does not understand
that wiser men
are laughing AT him.
-Hávamál: Stanza 24
At first glance, this stanza looks like a simple tale of a fool who can't tell when other people are making fun of him. If we look a little deeper though, the verse isn't really about "the fool". It's about knowing who your friends are, and keeping good company. Think carefully about the people you keep in your life, and ask yourself how many of them would stick with you through tough times. It's those friendships that get us through the dark patches in our lives, and they're worth their weight in gold.
Today's "Daily Hávamál" was brought to you by Huginn's Heathen Hof.
