Hávamál, The Saying of Odin, Stanza 5

Hail and welcome! This is Huginn's Heathen Hof, with your Daily Hávamál.
Original-
Vits er þörf
þeims viða ratar
dælt er heima hvat
at augabragði verðr
sá er ekki kann
ok með snotrum sitr
Translation-
The traveler should keep their wits sharp
the unwise should stay at home.
Those who know nothing,
and sit among the wise
will become a laughing stock.
-Hávamál: Stanza 5
Talk about some timeless advice! This stanza begins a transition from the topic of hospitality, to the topic of wisdom. The message behind five it pretty straight forward. If you're going to leave home, you need to be ready for anything; and if you don't know what you’re talking about, DON'T try to fake it. Trust me, people will know. You're not going to look clever, all you’re going to do is make a fool out of yourself.
In an age where it seems so easy to become an "instant expert" on the internet, I think this sage advice is more important than ever.
