The United States is not, and was never intended to be, a democracy. This country's founders, with a few notable exceptions like Thomas Paine, feared and hated democracy, which they compared to mob rule. Technically speaking, this country is a republic, although in point of fact, it is an oligarchy--government of, by, and for the rich. Need proof? In two of the last five presidential elections, the candidate receiving the most popular votes did not become president. In three of the last seven contests, the "winner" garnered less than 50% of all ballots cast. Democracy is supposed to mean rule by the majority. The Electoral College was deliberately established to curtail direct democracy, and tragically this week, it has produced yet another undemocratic result. I sincerely wish that our country would become a democracy, but we would need to do much more than eliminating the Electoral College for that to occur. For starters, we need to prevent big money interests from buying our political system. The brutal reality is that in America, it is one dollar one vote, not one person one vote, a situation greatly exacerbated by the horrible Supreme Court decision in the "Citizen's United" case. We need to abolish the concept of "corporate personhood," an unconstitutional perversion of the intent of the Fourteenth Amendment, crafted out of thin air by late 19th century corporate lawyers and continuously sanctified by a corrupted judiciary ever since. But these necessary reforms would require further Constitutional Amendments, itself an extremely cumbersome and undemocratic process, which is highly unlikely to occur in a country where so many citizens lack a basic understanding of the actual nature of this system of governance. I firmly believe that nothing short of real democracy can prevent this imperialistic, war mongering, exploitative oligarchy from destroying this country, its freedoms, and the planet's fragile environment. The thoroughly hypocritical Democratic Party, whose neoliberal leadership conspired to nominate the dreadful Hillary Clinton, cannot reasonably be expected to act as the instrument for the radical changes that are necessary to avoid further catastrophes. We the people must create a viable mechanism for sustainable progressive change, and do so very quickly.
I am so sorry you do not believe in our Constitutional Democracy that was set up by our Founding Fathers. Please get over it the way we conservatives out over Obama's Election twice.
