Dakota access pipeline protest

Blog Last Activity 9 years ago 516 views 21 comments

I am so discouraged by the way our people are still treated. We as a people are so close to Mother Earth and the proper way to treat her.  And yet we are punished for loving her. The world sees the reality of this situation and yet nothing is done. How can the white man claim to be civilized yet still maintain the same attitude that was present over 100 years ago. I feel sorry for a culture that has little to no respect for people that deserve it. They will be judged when the time comes to meet the creator and I'm sad to say there will be many lost souls. Love to all.

This whole situation breaks my heart. How I wish common sense could rule over mega money. When will people learn to respect our planet the way Native Americans do?

Authorities on Monday defended their decision to douse protesters with water during a skirmish in subfreezing weather near the Dakota Access oil pipeline, and organizers said at least 17 protesters were taken to the hospital — including some who were treated for hypothermia.

Protesters trying to push past a long-blocked bridge on a state highway late Sunday and early Monday were turned back by authorities using tear gas, rubber bullets and water hoses.

The struggle by Native peoples to prevent the Dakota pipeline presents in microcosm a clash between two irreconcilable views about nature and man's place in the world. Indigenous populations have correctly understood that man is merely a part of nature, and have structured their lives to live in harmony with an environment that supports all life and future generations. This view regards the earth as sacred, a manifestation of the divine, and the mother to all the world's creatures. This philosophy of life is in stark contrast to the perspective of Judeo-Christian capitalists, who believe that man is called to be the master of nature, to have dominion over the earth and all things in it, and to use the gifts of the planet as he sees fit, taking no thought of tomorrow. The supposedly "primitive" view of Native peoples created a Western Hemisphere civilization which flourished for over 70,000 years. The Judeo-Christian capitalist view, which violently invaded this hemisphere 500 years ago, has certainly developed the most scientifically and technologically advanced civilization in world history, yet for all its achievements, has recklessly placed the very existence of the human species at risk through environmental degradation and the proliferation of nuclear, biological and chemical weaponry. Back in the early 1980s, President Reagan appointed James Watt, a fundamentalist Christian, to the position of Secretary of the Interior, the cabinet post most responsible for the protection/exploitation of the environment. Watt was perversely honest enough to admit that he advocated policies that were short sighted and destructive to the environment, but he justified this position by stating that none of this mattered, because the Apocalypse was at hand and that Jesus was coming back at any moment to create the "New Jerusalem" for all believers. The numerous ways in which Christian capitalists can cherry pick their scripture for rationalizations for their awful politics never ceases to amaze and enrage me. The call to all people of conscience here is clear. Stop the Dakota pipeline!

I am so ashamed to be a "white person" now, so many of us realize that we need to respect the earth and stop raping her but the big oil companies are still putting profit ahead of people and the planet. I dream of the day when we finally stop killing our planet and hope that day does not come too late, it is getting close!
