This is a great topic for a blog posting, and I'm looking forward to watching this Stewart Lee video. As an older guy, I was first drawn to this art form by the work of George Carlin. This led in relatively short order to an appreciation of such talents as Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Woody Allen, and Redd Foxx. Then came Richard Pryor, perhaps the greatest of them all. In the 1980s I discovered Rodney Dangerfield, and through his HBO Young Comedians specials was introduced to such talents as Sam Kinison, Robert Schimmel, and the incomparable Bill Hicks. Pryor's natural heir, Eddie Murphy, was also coming on the scene at this time, with stand-up specials like Delirious and Raw. Today I would choose Chris Rock as the best practitioner of the art, but I also enjoy Ricky Gervais and the irascible Lewis Black. The only woman I would put in this exalted company is the hilarious Wanda Sykes. I'm sure that I'll be kicking myself later for leaving out some other amazing performers.
