New material...this will be interesting
I think i am wasted here, if i have no comments then there won't be chapter two !
I had returned to Edinburgh, and my boarding school, in January having turned 15 the Christmas before, on the notice board in my 10 man dorm was a new name, R R MacGregor, i checked the dorm room, and the end bed near the door was empty, so he hadn't actually arrived. I settled in and packed away my clothes and joined my school friends, who, like me, were all kilted, as was the tradition. and we chatted about what we had got up to at the Christmas break. Angus Haig brought up the subject of our new dorm buddy, but no-one knew anything about him , which was unusual, Fetters is a very exclusive boarding school, and we all knew about each other because all our families were well known in Scotland, many were sons of the Aristocracy like mine, so this new member was a mystery, and by the following morning when classes began, he had still not arrived. It was about ten thirty in the morning when someone entered the room, and his presence was obvious to everybody, before we actually saw him, i turned to look as this tall red haired boy strode in, fully kilted in the MacGregor Tartan, he walked to our housemaster and handed him his forms, and the housemaster introduced us to Master Robert R MacGregor, and i suddenly realised who he was, There could be no mistake, this very handsome boy, my age, was the direct decedent of Rob Roy MacGregor, the 17th century Hero, who was called the Scottish Robin Hood. a Highland outlaw who dominated Scottish life for many years and his exploits were legendary. His name in Gaelic was Raibeart Rudadh MacGrioggair and his middle name Roy in Gaelic meant Red, the colour of his hair, he was born in 1671, I knew all about him because to us Stuarts, he was a hero, who joined the Jacobite Revolution to aid King James 11, James Stuart, my ancestor. He was taken in and aided by The Duke of Argyle and imprisoned by The Duke of Montrose. who he waged a blood feud with for decades. I watched this young Rob Roy quite intently. He seemed very self assured, and his presence in the room was electric, as the housemaster rattled on, this boy suddenly glanced directly at me, and those bright hazel eyes bored deep into my soul, i blushed and he smiled slightly. The housemaster finished talking and this boy sat to my left and a row nearer the front of the class, that was the very first time i met Robert, and it left me breathless.
The day passed quickly, and we were in the canteen eating dinner and chatting, when Robert walked in, and made a beeline straight towards me, holding his tray of food, i watched as he approached, he smiled and said, 'Do you mind if I sit here?' he nodded to an empty seat opposite mine across the table, i said, 'not at all' and he sat down, he reached out his hand, 'Robert,' was all he said, i was about to reply but he stopped me, 'I know exactly who you are, we are almost Kinsmen!' I looked at him closely, he was broad shouldered, but slim with dark red hair, not ginger, he was very handsome with bright hazel eyes. 'Your ancestor fought for the Stuarts over 350 years ago, ' I said quietly, 'You are that MacGregor?', He nodded, 'Like i say, were almost kinsmen,' and we both laughed. I asked him why he had suddenly arrived at Fetters two years later than the rest of us, and he said he had been living in Ohio, where the present Clan Chief of the MacGregor's lived, i said, 'You didn't pick up and American Accent,' and he laughed and replied to me with an exaggerated Highland Twang to his voice, his real voice was very lilting and soft, so very much a Highlander. I was intrigued, 'You said you know 'exactly who i am, How?' Robert smiled, 'When i was told i was coming to fetters, and what dorm i was in, i checked who was in my new dorm, and your name popped up, i asked my father about you, and he said you were a direct descendant of King James 11, so i logged on and found 'The Valley of The Stuarts', so, like i say, i know everything about you,!' I smiled to myself, you don't know quite everything about me, and i hope, when you do find out, it won't put you off, because my gaydar didn't ping, this boy was straight!.
We finished classes for the day and headed to our various dorms, when i reached mine Robert's bed was made up and he was sitting on it reading, He intrigued me a great deal, i was not aware that his family had wealth, Fetters is as expensive as Eaton, but i had to resist the temptation to pry, i wanted him as a friend, he looked up as i walked in, 'Hello Rory, you don't mind me calling you that do you?' i smiled and sat next to him, 'and what did you think you should call me?' 'Lord Rory?' he suggested, I grinned at him, 'If you do that you will be calling half the boys here Lord as well, 'no, we don't use titles here, Rory's fine, what do i call you?' 'Rob,' was the reply, and that started a friendship that has lasted to today, but for some reason, i cannot fathom, i was always a bit shy with Rob, all our conversations were normal 15 year old boys conversations, commuters, sports, etc, but we never discussed sex in any form. One thing i did discover early on, was that both his father, and brother were investment bankers, so that explained the school fees.
Over the next few weeks we became close, he was liked and admired by many other boys, he had an unflappable manner about him, he spoke softly, and always with a smile, and was fiercely intelligent, but as hard as the other boys tried, it soon became clear to them, that i was his best friend. i had phoned my parents and told them about my new dorm mate and they were as intrigued as I, and asked me to invite him to our home for spring break, i asked Rob if he would like to stay with us, and he said he would ask his parents and let me know, i found out that he, and his family lived in Stirling, the MacGregor heartland.
Spring break duly arrived and Rob had said that his parents said he could visit for a week but, quite naturally, wanted him home after that. i was over the moon, he would be 16 in June, so he was six months older than me, i said to him that we might not be in the same dorm room next term because he would be 16, he smiled and said, 'I have checked, if your 16 after June you have to move up a dorm, as i am not i stay,' and he added, 'You don't get rid of me that easily!' and i blushed, and he tousled my hair and laughed.
Hamish arrived at Fetters in my fathers Bentley, to pick us up, i had forewarned Rob about Hamish, but added his bark was worse than his bite, Rob was still impressed with the giant Hamish. We drove to the Valley of The Stuarts and swept through the Southern Gatehouse, I had told Rob not to use my parents titles, he was a friend and a guest, he nodded that he understood, many of the villages waved at us as we drove up to the Fortress, Rob said, 'Your popular.' and i explained that these people had known me since i was born, and many were friends, i didn't mention Jaime or Jon, obviously.
My parents were waiting for us at the front Portico, with the huge columns of granite either side, we stepped out of the car and were greeted with hugs for me and handshakes for Rob, one of the Gillies collected our bags. We all retired to the drawing room, where i had warned Rob he would be interrogated, nicely, by my parents. We all sat down, and my mother started with, 'We have put Robert next to you in Richards room darling, is that alright,?' I thanked her and smiled at Rob, we would be next to each other, with that concealed divided door. I couldn't wait to see his reaction when i showed it to him.
If you have read any of my other stories, then you will know about the deviding room between my bedroom and my brother Richards, my room has an on-suite glass paneled bathroom with shower, hot tub and lavatory, in the old days, Richard would walk naked from his bedroom to mine, which at that time was Edmonds, and occasionally, startle some of the women who worked at the fortress, so my father had a deviding door installed, but it blended in with the decor, after all the rooms were four hundred years old, he didn't want an ugly modern door installed, but you would never spot it, unless you knew it was there, you just wouldn't see it.
Everything was going swimmingly, my parents had found out he had no special dietary needs, and, like all of us, loved Game, so i was encouraged by them to show Rob around the House and the village, he seemed very happy and excited, as was I, i had him to my self for a whole seven days, now i could really get to know him. I decided to show him around the Village first, he looked at me and said, 'Why is there no road markings or Road signs, no telegraph poles?' i explained to him that only the family used the road through the village and that my father had installed a Mobile Phone Mast in the mountains so every one had a mobile, we never had a telephone link in the village before 1996. 'Do the villages not mind not using the road?' I smiled at him, 'The terrible Earl treating his subjects badly?' Rob, grinned at me, 'Well i just thought!', i asked him to look at the houses, either side of the road, all were made of stone but were detached, but none had an access to the road directly, 'All their cars are at the back of the houses, there wasn't any access ever, this village predates the motor car buy a couple of hundred years,' Just then i heard someone shout my name, i turned and Jon came bounding up, followed by the ever faithful Bobo, the huge Windsor Stud Chocolate Labrador, and Jon gave me a big hug, 'Hello Rory, when did you get here, i released myself from his grip and blushing slightly, said 'Only a couple of hours ago,' I turned to Rob,' 'This is my friend from school Robert.' Jon shook Robs hand, we chatted for a while and Jon wandered off to the Cafe, 'Are all your friends that tactile?' he asked me, noticing my blushes, 'Yes,' i answered, 'But not normally in public!' Robert gave me a quizzical look, then the sun broke through the clouds and the yellow road sparkled like diamonds, Rob, took a sharp intake of breath, it always amazed people when they saw the effect for the first time, he turned and looked at me, is this road made of Gems.? i smiled and explained to him how it came about, when my father was a boy, his father had discovered the art of making semi-precious stones, you put rough coloured stones into a rolling machine, like a cement mixer, you add sharp sand and spin for twelve hours, and out pops polished gemstones, he was taken with the idea, because one of the Lochs on the Estate had tons stunning white quartz pebbles surrounding it, still has, and, as he intended to lay a concrete road from each gatehouse to the Fortress, he had an idea, they added yellow die to the concrete mix, and when the road was laid, in stages, and before each section dried, these many thousands of polished stones were sprinkled on top and a heavy roller sank them down. This wasn't just a artistic gesture, my grandfather had experimented with the stones and he found that in sunlight and moonlight they illuminated the road, and even made the snow melt faster above through refraction, this was before electricity came to the Valley, so it was an important and useful improvement on pitch black. especially when we were using Coach and Horses. We went back to the house, in case Robbie turned up and did something even worse, then a thought struck me, 'Erm Rob, you do know we dress for dinner,?' He stopped dead in his tracks and turned to me, 'No i didn't, you never mentioned it, how could I know?' 'Don't worry, ' i said with a wan smile 'i have enough dinner clothes to dress half the boys in the village, after all i do have three older brothers, let me show you your room, and we can sort something out.'
