Would you tell your employer?

Apparently more people feel they can reveal their sexual preference to their employer.  While I still feel this is a risky move (sadly) even in this day and age, I'm just curious what everyone thinks about it.  Have you told your boss?  Would they guess?  Is it even their business?  Here's a link to a recent article about it.

Well I am not a big believer in shouting I am gay from the rooftops. One I am a pretty talented jock and play a lot of sports and have a full ride on the baseball. But and you may not agree with my logic but my parents have never shared their sexual exploits with me so I really felt no desire to share it with them. Now we did get caught everyone was very positive because it was my best friend forever and he was like family and oddly enough my parents and his parents felt sort of relieved cause they knew we would take care of each other. It's like we have 4 parents. But, I am very slow to tell people. A few guys who are my closest friends and room mates and on the baseball team know and have never told anyone. But I am in no hurry to mix my personal life with outsiders.

Before I retired I was an employer and held the view that I would select the best person for the job concerned irrespective of their sexuality. It was never an issue though I sometimes threw the odd question in about homophobia to see what sort of reaction I got from prospective employees.

I am the boss. I get rid of any homophobes.

Good for you Tolead! It's more people like you standing up for what they believe that has made great changes in how most major corporations look at this issue. You have to take it on a case by case basis until it's part of federal labor law and all the states have implemented it...I think the US is behind most other prominent countries around the world. What have you worldwide members experienced?

I have been out at work for the last 33 years. Not had an issue. But did understand the risk every time. Last job I got in 1999, I was offered the job and stopped the hiring manager to have a discussion about being gay and having a partner. He was good with it, but asked what if he hadn't responded like I wanted. Told him I would have told him to take his job and stick it. Been out too long to go back in any closet for any reason.

You're right that it's still risky, but it's worth the risk. It's usually a mute point here in Minnesota, because everyone is too passive aggressive to tell you how they really feel, but I think everyone would be surprised to find out how much support they could gather from regular folks. My boss for instance is 39, a church going woman, and we work in a small christian non-profit assisted living facility. I'm a young anti-theist gay guy with long hair and a beard who's come out to both staff and residents, and my boss could not do more for me. In fact I just tested positive for marijuana during a random drug test and she's found a workaround already lol. You really would be surprised how many people realize they really don't care if you're gay if they know. Some people might not feel like they have this option, but options always exist without having to fall on your own sword.

I have been out at work since 1983. It can be a risky proposition. And in the state I live in, there are no protections in the workplace by law. But have been lucky to work in organizations that have policies that provide protection. Each person needs to do what is safe and right for them.

I work for a company which welcomes diversity in all forms. we have a global LGBT-team. here in germany we have plans to be very seeable at the next CSD in Berlin. we want to be there with a truck! our VP already approved this plan! I came out to my teammates the very first day in the training room. so, at my company there`s no problem with being gay.

I can not tell my boss, he and a few others in my workplace are very close-minded. There is no law to protect my job where I live and even if there were such a law it would not change the hearts of the haters.
