Venezuela is a third world country with one valuable asset--oil. Since the price of oil has collapsed on world markets, there have been difficulties for their economy, particularly because Venezuela's oil is the heavy sludge variety, which is more costly to refine than the "light sweet" middle eastern type. But 20 years of democratic socialism has provided the Venezuelan people with access to free medical care, public housing, and adult education programs that have increased literacy rates by almost 80%, tremendous achievements that the prior 100 years of capitalism couldn't deliver, and never even attempted to deliver. Additionally, CITGO, the Venezuelan national oil company, provided low cost home heating oil to poor families HERE IN AMERICA, at a time when American oil companies, making record profits and enjoying huge tax breaks, kept prices at unreasonably high levels. Mophead2009 is right. There are increasingly large areas of the United States that are taking on the characteristics of third world countries. The people of Flint Michigan don't have access to safe drinking water, the most vital commodity to human life, and the activist Erin Brockovich reports that there are another 250 communities in the U.S. that are facing similar problems with their water supplies. Doesn't that tell you something essential about the amoral nature of the kind of unregulated predatory capitalism practiced here in America? The pursuit of profits over people is destroying this country, and wrecking havoc with the global environment. The democratic socialism proposed by the presidential candidacy of Senator Bernie Sanders is the first step ordinary citizens can make toward correcting this grotesque set of inhumane priorities.

Sen. Sanders stands for legitimate fair capitalism and progressive/democratic socialism working together as it does in many European countries. What is going on in Venezuela is hardly a comparison....this is just more of Bluto's scare tactics bullshit.
