New Research Reveals The US Cities That Have Already Been Doomed By Climate Change

Low-lying American cities such as New Orleans and Miami will be mostly submerged at high tide in the future, but with extreme carbon cuts, large coastal cities in New York and California could be spared, according to new findings published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences this week.

Previous work revealed that unabated carbon emissions up to the year 2100 would lead to a global sea-level rise of 4.3 to 9.9 meters (14 to 32 feet). And unfortunately, even if we were to cut carbon emissions immediately and abruptly, temperatures will continue to increase for millennia because of the long residence time of CO2 in the atmosphere and how slowly heat is exchanged between the ocean and the atmosphere.

By examining data on topography, tides, and censuses, a trio led by Climate Central’s Benjamin Strauss calculated the risk U.S. cities face from long-term sea level rise under scenarios of unabated climate change (and the inevitable collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet) as well as those with aggressive cuts in carbon emissions.

More than 20 million Americans currently live on at-risk land, the team found. The total area includes up to 1,825 municipalities, including the majority of 21 cities with population sizes of 100,000 or more. With aggressive carbon cuts – and if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet remains stable – more than half of these municipalities could avoid becoming inundated.

The researchers also calculated lock-in dates. That’s when the cumulative effects of carbon emissions commit a city to a rise in sea level that submerges land where more than half of their population lives. If we carry on as usual with unabated carbon emissions, Norfolk, Virginia, faces a lock-in date of 2045, for example. For New Orleans, the limit has already been exceeded.

"In our analysis, a lot of cities have futures that depend on our carbon choices but some appear to be already lost," Strauss tells AFP. "And it is hard to imagine how we could defend Miami in the long run." The low-elevation city’s porous limestone foundation means that sea walls and levees won’t help. "New Orleans is a really sad story," he adds. "It is a lot worse looking than Miami." Under all scenarios, Florida is the most affected state. California, Louisiana, and New York trail slightly behind.

The team has developed an

Naomi Klein's last book, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING, makes the same point, funksexual. Her thesis is that we can have a relatively stable environment, or we can have capitalism, but we cannot have both. On behalf of future generations, I agree with you--destroy capitalism!

Yeah, thanks to USAInIndia for that informative video. We must help in ANY WAY WE CAN. Destroy capitalism... that is helping to increase global warming, I feel.

A new report based on INTERNAL documents from Exxon (now ExxonMobil) shows that the company's climate scientists warned their management team in 1977 that the continual burning of fossil fuels could endanger humanity. Exxon's response was to craft a 30 million dollar public relations campaign to refute the findings of their own experts, and to create doubt and confusion among the public. Based on some of the responses posted here, I think that its fair to say that Exxon's strategy of denial was a phenomenal success.

You've actually put 2 + 2 together, JohnE! (And I will check out some of your references, thank you.) Man-made Climate Change, formerly known as man-made Global Warming, formerly known as Pollution, is caused by Fossil Fuels. No one in the civilized world would give two shits about the Middle East, if it weren't for Fossil Fuels. If not for Fossil Fuels, there would be few wars in this day and age, in my opinion. And Homo sapiens and its population of (way too many) on Earth would not be on the VERGE OF EXTINCTION. (I could not give a flying fuck about Muslim extremists chopping my head off. I find my species becoming extinct, more important than a religion & my relationship to it.)

Michael Mann and his bogus 'hockey stick' graph, The University of East Anglia fraud, Al Gore, the demonisation of CO2 (a plant food), a complicit media selling fear (the chicken little syndrome), the Obama administration and the politically-correct academia dependent on "research" funding , the language (deniers!!!) used by all of the above to stifle any reasoned debate, the ongoing myth that 'the science is settled'(it's not), the fact that the IPCC's alarmist computer models have abjectly failed to predict the current cessation of global temperature rise (yes it's true), the laughable change in narrative from Global Warming to 'Climate Change'....I could go on. This the biggest hoax in the history of the world, you just need to be 'enlightened' to fall for it.

As far as global threats to humanity go, religious intolerance and Islamic extremism is killing far more people than a 2 degree temperature rise ever will. Oh and to put it into perspective, all of us gayboys would be liable to be tossed of a tall building by Muslim extremists if we professed our sexuality in ISIS controlled territory.
let the insults begin...

The climate denier response is something one would expect from the consumers of "Fox News," but not from a group of supposedly enlightened Gay and Bisexual men. While its absolutely a necessary life skill for all of us to "think outside of the box," certain scientific realities should be faced courageously. We must put an end to the global system of unregulated predatory capitalism, or it will put an end to us. Ultimately, I tend to agree with George Carlin's view that its arrogant of us to believe that we can "save the planet." As he said, "the planet isn't going anywhere. We are! The planet is going to shake us off like a dog shaking off a bad case of fleas." Welcome to the future, climate skeptics!

I was having some mild hope for saving this planet up until I read this blog. I didn't realize there were still people out there that think climate change is an elaborate hoax.

bury your heads in the sand guys wasnt me no it wasnt my fault ...dosent happen its the sun its gods fault ...... why do people hate scientists and trust politicians yet loath government or think the local pastor has more knowledge or the news channel - than someone who went to college studied and learnt stuff ??? and learnt facts ... oh facts are dangerous kids - means your are smarter than your parents - oh btw how do creationists explain dinosaus ??? so climate change isnt a human problem it happens every now and then through milleniums - but it is happening and does so ... so if you want to survive look at the facts find a solution be a scientist be curious about the world about us the universe - scientists have a questioning nature - iggnorant politicians manipulate facts for votes votes equals money and a nice house car and ego so fuck you world im grabbing what i can - we are dissposible

Much of this climate change research seems to assume that solar activity is constant, which it is not.
While it is good to clear up the effect of human activity on the planet, including CO2 output, I find it difficult to believe that the effect of some slight increase in CO2 levels outweighs the variability of solar activity.

I googled John Coleman, what is he a doctor of? Only thing I could find was he has a degree in journalism, while the man is certainly very successful being the CEO of The Weather Channel well that makes him a great businessman but does not make him an atmospheric researcher with a doctorate. I also found this interesting read https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/11/03/why-does-anyone-pay-attention-to-john-coleman-weather-channel-co-founder-on-climate-change/ Now I don't know how much to believe about climate change, in my short life can't say I notice a difference but I do also firmly beleive continually dumping ton after ton after ton of toxic waste into the air, land and water can not be good for the planet.

Its not just computer projections, guynflint. Didn't you see the satellite imagery last year showing a huge loss in the snow and ice cover in Greenland, or the film of massive glacier collapse in Antarctica? Average mean temperatures keep rising every year, and we've witnessed an increase in the number and severity of storm activities. The oil companies of various nations are rushing to drill in the Arctic because the significant loss of polar ice is making production there possible and profitable. I know that FACTS are "inconvenient things," and I'm the last person who would trust the government to tell us the truth about anything, but over 97% of climate scientists are telling us that we're in huge trouble here. Are they incompetent, or all part of a gigantic conspiracy? And to what end? Each year, a report is prepared for the Pentagon's Joint Chiefs of Staff called a threat assessment guide. In it, the best experts working for the government detail the primary threats to American security, and in their 2007 report, climate change topped their list of dangers for the first time, more than terrorism or the proliferation of nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons. Meanwhile, the climate deniers continue to collect their fat paychecks from the energy consortium, which has a powerful vested interest in maintaining the status quo.

why is it that people want to believe this stuff? this is not new info. in the 80's they said this and that by 2000 the ice caps would be gone..blah..blah..blah..
it's a hoax guys based on computer projections from manipulated data. we have to ask..why do these people want us to believe this bs. and dr. mora...why is it that the people spreading this bs get thier $$ from govt. agencies? please google dr. john coleman for more on this matter.

At this point the fate of the world is largely in the hands of countries like China and India and the decisions they make about further economic development. The carbon we don't burn in the USA gets sent over there for them to burn. And they're still hungry for it. Eventually our ignorance catches up with us and cause and effect take hold. It was simply a matter of time before something like anthropogenic climate change would bite humanity in the ass. We're not so special living on "our" little dust mote in the void. We in the USA want the world to do things the American Way and we're getting our wish granted in Asia, the good, the bad, and the ugly. And it's going to hurt.

Why is it, marshmont, that virtually all of the scientists who deny the reality of man-made climate change just happen to work for oil and gas companies, or for "think tanks" funded by them? Does the concept of "conflict of interest" enter into this equation at all? Do you find the testimonies of scientists working for cigarette manufacturers credible? The fact that a politician like Al Gore might well be a hypocrite in the manner in which he conducts his personal life doesn't change the overwhelming consensus of independent scientists on this issue, and is merely an ad hominem attack to deflect attention from the substantive questions. If you are truly serious about powerful entities taking excessive control over our lives, as we all should be, I suggest that you and your smug buddy Bill Whittle pay much closer attention to the plutocratic-corporate takeover of our democratic processes, as we the people, represented in Congress assembled, are the sole source of legitimacy in this land. Under 18th century British common law, and the early laws governing post-revolutionary America, limited liability corporations were artificial creations strictly proscribed in their privileges, responsibilities, and lifespans, by the state charters that sanctioned them. Thomas Jefferson, watching in horror at the rapid expansion of corporate power in the early Republic, warned in 1819 that "if we allow these unaccountable private tyrannies to flourish, then the democratic experiment in America will be lost." As Noam Chomsky has noted, Jefferson saw only the beginnings of this, but he was quite prescient. Benito Mussolini defined fascism as "the melding of the corporation and the state," and today, after the Supreme Court decision in the "Citizens United" case, allowing eternal corporations to outright purchase our political system, we are well on the way to what Ralph Nader has called "Corporations uber alles."
