It would be quite a revelation but the fact he supported openly gay people is another plus that Mr. Rogers was indeed the sweetheart that he seemed to be on TV... he was a thrill to watch as a child. May he rest in peace.

I am fro Pittsburgh where he was from. No Fred was ot gay happily married. He was also a pastor.

I found Mr. Rogers on TV when I was in college. My roommates had gone home for Xmas break, and I was alone in our shared apartment idly flipping through TV channels. What a revelation; I was hooked on this man's gentle, kind demeanor. To me, watching his show was like a good therapy session. Later, I wrote to him after 9/11 trying to apprehend why human beings commit atrocities. He wrote back with a sensible, soothing message. I still have the framed letter hanging in my living room. I wrote to him again sometime later, and hadn't realized he was in poor health. Some two weeks later after having received his response, he passed away. I don't especially care whether or not he was gay. He brought some sanity an kindness into a world that desperately needs it.

It doesn't matter to me whether Mr. Rogers was or wasn't. I loved his show growing up, it was a great entertainment show for kids, like Captain Kangaroo. When he died he widowed his long-time wife. I've thought about the implication over the years, but he still did a great kids' TV show.

Yes, he was Nate88. He won the CMH. Congressional Medal of Honor.

He was a decorated Marine and the Producers had him wear those silly sweaters to cover up his many 'tats' (a matter of record).

Really interesting article. Cheers. It made me think of that unbelievably camp fitness guru Richard Simmons. On youtube you can hear different occasions when Simmons appeared on the Howard Stern radio show, on one occasion leaving in floods of tears but still coming back. He and Stern obviously were friends and had enormous affection for each other, but as Stern is wont to do, he just pressed Simmons relentlessly asking about sex and relationships. Simmons just wouldn't go there, and listening to the two of them play mental chess over the issue is fascinating.
