RENT BOYS

Blog Last Activity 11 years ago 738 views 10 comments

Rent boys, hustlers, garcons de passe, Stricher ... every country has its name for them. For many people, rent boys are a form of gay icon, they openly challenge society's stereotypes about masculinity and what men are and aren't allowed to do with their bodies. They hold clients in thrall with their beauty, their young flesh, offer to make dreams come true, if only for a few minutes. If you ask them they will tell you that they can't be bought, they simply hire out their body for a moment or so. It might sound glamorous and daring, but the reality is usually very different and bleak. The photo is of the late, lovely River Phoenix in the 1991 film, 'My own private Idaho', which begins with him getting a blow job from a client. The rumour at the time was that in order to rehearse for the part, Phoenix, who was straight, asked another actor to suck him off so he would know 'what it felt like to be blown by a man' - some boys have all the luck! This link is for the opening sequence of the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0J65zAflTY So what do you think? Are rent boys heroic or tragic figures, or neither?

Thanks Andrew, I'm touched by your confidence in my knowledge - the origins of the term 'rent boy' may be Victorian, although there were so many words for a male prostitute at the time, such as 'marjery' and 'molly' to name but two, that it's hard to be precise. The 'rent' part of it might come from the French word 'rente', which means 'income', 'allowance' or 'pension' (nowadays, as in the past, a 'rentier' is someone with private means). And you're right to mention the trial of Oscar Wilde, because it was the scandal of that event that brought the whole question of male prostitution and its obscure vocabulary to the attention of the wider public, not only in Britain but across the world. In Wilde's day (and this was still going on as late as the 1960s in London), it was common practice for young soldiers in the Guards or the Household Cavalry to rent themselves out to wealthy clients - to pick up one of them up when he was on sentry duty, the custom was to stick a note on a Foot Guard's bayonet, or down the top of the jackboot of a Cavalry trooper. So I think that 'rent boy' might have come into use as a result of Wilde's trial. It has certainly been a common expression in Britain and the USA ever since.

I've been casually acquainted with a few guys that have done this but I've never engaged them professionally. Fortunately I've never had to. There's always been enough free dick out there. But what I gathered from them is that they were in the business by their own choice and did not feel used or victimized in any way. Most had regular jobs and did this to supplement their income. All were operating independently and would pick and choose whom they would provide services for. They did this completely on their own terms so as far as I'm concerned, under these conditions it's their business and no one else's.

Tragic or heroic, the bottom line is that they are people like us, boys who are characterised by the lives they lead, just as the rest of us are as turd burglars, freckle stretchers, poofters, pillow biters, fags, nancy boys. Even the name, rent boy, is just another disparaging piece of contempt that seems to be associated with the trial of Oscar Wilde, but may be from an earlier Victorian period. If anyone knows its origins, Isidore will.

get rid of the pimp involvement, and if a person is comfortable with their line of work in the sex trade and working independently under their own control and decisions what is the problem? Why isn't it legal, taxed and health inspected like the Netherlands? It's those that are forced into it I feel for, them working and getting ripped of from people controlling them. Strangely some of the more persistent users of call girls/boys have been politicians. lol

This has generated some good replies. There must be some who are heroic: straight, and forced by circumstances to support themselves or family or others for years by acts that revolt them. Tragic are teen boys trafficked, enslaved, pimped, subject to violence from their owners and clients, suffering unbearable pain and catching diseases from those who refuse condoms as if they were pleasure-denying wellington boots. But there must be other categories: those who see renting as income for the basics or to better their lives; those who enjoy exploring as many cocks and bums as possible. (A straight friend wanted to fuck every married woman in Cornwall; he failed butt he desire for frequency and multiplicity was so strong.)The act itself can be framed by good food, theatre, a concert, even deep affection, and therre is the guaranteed warmth of flesh on flesh, and the certainty of another shared orgasm soon. For some, it is a reliving of the abuse from a parent, sometimes the only real affection they ever had.... It all depends how one regards ones body and the sexual acts: one may feel violated or guilty (especially those brought up in the northern protestant culture), but one may just love the ecstasy and what used to be called in the old sense the 'gay abandon'. A complex topic

not all "hustlers" are drug ravished guys who need to make a quick buck to buy more drugs. I had the pleasure a few years ago, long after the death of my young partner, on a couple occasions where I was so lonely, to get together with this guy. He was working a job, and did it for the attention, university tuition, and he was a brilliant guy, who today is a very prominent business man. -brillo

I know people thrown out of their houses by their families in rejection of their sexualities. No food, no shelter, no experience, poor job opportunities, no skills, no one to talk to. What they have is youth hostel, pot noodles, noise, rough druggies, weekly attendance at job centre and housing office and £30/week.

Do you see options here for these people????

I would not call them heroic. And I think the path that leads one to the profession is what determines whether it is tragic...or the sensible use of a young man's skill and beauty to make a living. I know a wonderful handsome man in his 30's. He has his Ph.D and M.D. and paid for it all as a rent boy. He used what he had to make his life what he wanted. Tragic not in the least. Heroic, no not that either. Just a intelligent use of the skills he had to take his life where he wanted. A decision made clearly and honorably.
