Every community has its stories. We retell them to remind ourselves of our origins, to note our progress, and to recommit ourselves to each other. We are too wise to believe that one instant in one place in history made manifest our movement for equality. But we can look to the events of June 27-28, 1969 as a moment of tremendous significance -- as a moment when the odds were long against us and we fought back anyway; as a spark -- not the first, not the only, but nevertheless a spark -- which grew into a blaze to burn unjust laws and light the way toward progress. Let us recall the Stonewall Riots.

having live in Toronto a long time I recall the famous bath house raids here in the 60's, where the gay men were thrown to the streets, beaten with Police batons, publically named, and humiliated, (some out of fear committed suicide) which spawned 33 individuals one day to become outspoken gay activists and after close to 50 years, changed views in this City to become a City than can hold one of the Largest gay pride parades ever this past weekend. Activism today is still needed. I hope the younger generation persists in bringing issues forward with peaceful protest and dialogue with those who get in the way.

it was indeed a turning point for gay activism, as was the southern USA black marches from the beatings and murders there. The Harvey Milks, Martin Luther Kings and many other in the struggle for gay and black rights. We must never forget what some gays paid and still pay for being gay. Fight on you young people, you deserve marriage, survivor pensions, housing, employment equality as heterosexuals have it. Peaceful demonstration brings change.-Brillo

A real Milestone in Gay Rights.. As usual, most things we have to fight for and please share a thought to the many GLTG people around the would who still have to ,put up with the Authorities, persecuting them just because of their Sexual Orientation .

This is a very interesting story. I'm surprised that it has not gotten more attention over the years...
