I missed out, but probably could have gotten lucky. The early 80's was not a great time to be gay, and even harder to be out, I think. I wasn't out, but I was around others who were. HIV/AIDS and politics were all-consuming for those who were out. For me, there was fun back then, and good experiences, but they weren't gay. SILENCE=DEATH and still does today, in a manner of speaking, though we've made progress.

Not out, shared room with VERY straight guy who was paranoid about "fags", had a few crushes which never worked out, went home on weekends to have sex with long time "friend with benefits". My university has a shower block with individual shower spaces with doors that lock, at least two walls of which each have peepholes at cock height, but not glory holes. Gay boys go there to watch, masturbate, get to know other gay people, to pick up and make out with people we like. This is my favourite experience, as it's safe, always active and accessible. I haven't had to wait longer than five minutes ever for some action. After a lecture I can be there in a few minutes and do whatever I want. If it wasn't for the showers I'd be living in a completely homophobic prison called home, when I go in there, into that slightly humid atmosphere, I can be me and not be frightened, it's a HUGE relief and release for me.
